Singing about their Lives

The LWF plans to invite the Zimbabwean Betseranai Choir to the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria, and the Assembly in Stuttgart (both in July 2010).

The 20-voice choir—12 women and 8 men—is composed of persons living with or affected by HIV. They sing about their lives, problems and challenges in a direct, joyful yet serious way. They embody the possibility of living positively with HIV in very difficult circumstances.

Since its creation in 2004, the choir has made its voice heard at many official meetings with the Zimbabwean government. In this way, for example, they obtained medical care and AIDS drugs for a remote village in Zimbabwe. The singers appeal to the public at large, but also advocate within the church for equal treatment of HIV-infected individuals and greater efforts in the area of HIV and AIDS prevention.

The choir is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe.
